Originally planned for placement in Barcelona, the Eiffel Tower was constructed in Paris, France between 1887 and 1889. Its purpose was to serve as an entrace to Exposition Universelle, marking the centenial anniversary of the French Revolution. At the time of completion, the Eiffel Tower was the world's largest tower and maintained that title till the construction of the NYC Chrysler Building in 1993. The tower originally met widespread criticism by the public and arts community. Today the tower is a landmark destination for Paris tourists and is widely known throuhout the world as a piece of structural art and a romantic icon.
